Town of Hoosick becomes a “Purple Heart Community”

The Purple Heart, the oldest and most prestigious military award was started by General George Washington in 1782. At that time, it was called the Badge of Military Merit. On February 22, 1932 General George MacArthur revived the Purple Heart on the bicentennial of Washington’s birthday.  Currently, the Purple Heart, per regulation is awarded in the name of the President of the United States to any member of the Armed Forces of the United States who, while serving under competent authority in any capacity with one of the U.S. Armed Services after April 5, 1917 has been wounded, killed, or has died after being wounded.

The process started when Tom McMartin, Howie Wright and myself met New York Senator Daphne Jordan at the 2019 Veteran’s Day program at the Hoosick Falls Senior Center. We spoke about the how Hoosick Falls has always been passionate about honoring our Veteran’s. Ms. Jordan was very much in awe of our Town of Hoosick Flag Program and Liberty Memorial Park.  She told us about she was sponsoring legislation, Senate Bill S.6745, to make New York State a Purple Heart State.

So right after the first on the year, we got busy forming a committee and committed to making the town a Purple Heart Town by August 7th, National Purple Heart Day.

On July 13th, the Town of Hoosick Board unanimously voted to adopt the resolution declaring the Town of Hoosick a “Purple Heart Town.”  The highway department graciously installed signs to let all traveling through know that we are a Purple Heart Town.

Now on August 7th at 6PM, a ceremony will be held in Wood Park to honor all the people from the Town of Hoosick who have earned this distinguished medal. We hope many will come to thank and honor those who fought for our freedoms.
